The Dude Abides

If I could vote, I'd pull the lever for Bob Barr or
write in Ron Paul's name. When I make up my mind, I'll put up a button on my blog, but I don't know if my schedule will allow me to work the phones. Hell, I don't even know if they have phones to work. Since the libertarian vote invariably comes out of the Republican pool, I guess that makes me an Obama supporter by default.

It wasn't always this way. When I lived in Canada, "the man" invariably hated Bush, so the contrarian in me thought that Bush must have something going for him. At this point, I should explain that "the man" was, or were, women, union reps who liked to swan about in Jeep Wranglers and Buicks, and invariably voted NDP (a socialist party) or Liberal (self-explanatory), the latter of which are Canada's natural governing party.

Since I was sucking on my frozen mittens waiting for public transit and earning a little less than half what these women made, I guess I always thought of Gore and Kerry as the establishment candidates. Sipping my coffee in a mug with Dubya's face plastered on it was a nice-passive aggressive-hip-ironic way of saying "fuck you" to "the squares".

However, I think my sweetie pie has managed to find the most devastating, anti-Bush article I've ever read. For the first time it really hit me (I suppose I'm every bit as intelligent as Jillette claims to be in this article) that a stupid policy is a stupid policy no matter who is in charge. Intelligence won't make a difference if the ideas are wrong, and it certainly won't matter when it comes to things the government can't fix, like natural disasters or the economy.

I've never consistently voted for any one party, at least in Canada. In a couple of elections, I've put an "X" next to a candidate's name out of spite. Because I didn't like the other guy, and the kind of people who vote for him. However, the last time I voted in Canadian federal election, I did the right thing, even though I didn't fully realize it at the time. I voted for the candidate because I genuinely believed in what the party, and by extension, the candidate, stood for.

Thank you sweetie. Eventually, when I'm able to dimple a chad for Bob Barr or Ron Paul, I'll be doing it for all the right reasons.

Update: It looks like I would write in Ron Paul's name on the ballot. Life is too short for bigotry and class warfare.
